Latin

GCSE Latin has been offered at Redborne since 2011 and we are very excited to be one of the few state schools across the country to be offering it as part of the curriculum. Between fifteen and forty-five students sit the exam each year, achieving excellent results and a lasting enthusiasm which sees many of them subsequently choose to take Classical Civilisation at A level.
There are three parts to the Eduqas GCSE course: Latin Language (50%), Roman Civilisation (20%), and Latin Literature (30%).

We use the Cambridge Latin Course and Suburani textbooks to study the grammar and vocabulary of the language, with additional texts as required. Students are expected to learn vocabulary and undertake translation on a regular basis. We also do some role playing, some cooking, and occasionally singing!

We run an educational visit to Rome, Pompeii, and Herculaneum every other year so that each student gets a chance during the course to take part in an experience that really brings to life the history that we study.
